IIRC Grub is a multistasge bootloader	by chrisbee	2006-09-07 19:38:12
and the first stage points to the later stage(s) in /boot/grub (or whatever the distribution uses) If you use a separate boot partition as the first partition on the hard drive you can possibly use dd to write the whole mbr and /boot to the drive in one hit.
