The person to pity is the one who can make NO deep attachments of any kind to anything or person. If the person in question CAN have a deep attachment, albeit non romantic one, it would not make them a lesser person, imnsho, just a different one. However there are many who because they CAN be or are romantic that cannot or refuse to understand those that are not. Many of those who used to chose the celibate/religious/scholarly life where those who could attach very deeply to "ideals/$deity/ect." but not really to people. Such people are uncommon and not really understood in societies oversaturated with the ideal of "romantic" love. My two cents, ymmv.
