UFie Gaming Corner - Indie Games (one is free!) by Gaming_Corner 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Repost due to modding of TLP. My apologies for not scanning that link well enough. Welcome to the Thursday edition of the UFie Gaming Corner! Below the block, I plug a neat Independent Games-focused website, and it's giving away a game for free!

Discussion of any and all types of gaming are welcome here - console games, PC games, pen and paper games, board games, it's all on the table.

If you mention or link to a game that other people might like to find later, please toss it in the Online Games or Download Games diary as appropriate. (And of course, head over there periodically to check out what's new!)

Daily news links and an archive can be found in the diary, and if you want to manually browse recent Gaming Corners, this link to the UF Toolbox will allow you to do so - just use the "previous cartoon" and "next cartoon" buttons to switch days.

If you have a topic you'd like to see covered in the Gaming Corner, or an article I ought to check out, feel free to email me at Ravenlock (put the little at symbol thingy here) inbox (put the little dot symbol thingy here) com. Time permitting, this will be posted daily, but anyone who wishes to cover it on a day when I'm being slow is of course welcome to do so - just copy the TLP from the previous day. :-)

JayIsGames (Link) always points me to the coolest stuff. This time, thanks to this post on their site, I found my way over to Manifesto Games.

Manifesto Games, a site born of the Scratchware Manifesto written back in 1999, aims to "build a viable channel for independently-created games", stating their complaints with the gaming industry and how they plan to help on (appropriately) their manifesto page.
The machinery of gaming has run amok.

Instead of serving creative vision, it suppresses it. Instead of encouraging innovation, it represses it. Instead of taking its cue from our most imaginative minds, it takes its cue from the latest month's PC Data list. Instead of rewarding those who succeed, it penalizes them with development budgets so high and royalties so low that there can be no reward for creators. Instead of ascribing credit to those who deserve it, it seeks to associate success with the corporate machine.

It is time for revolution.
It's a really neat site, and I've already found a couple of gems on there I otherwise would not have heard about. I downloaded the demo for Heretic Kingdoms (action RPG a la Diablo but with some different gameplay mechanics and arguably a better plot) last night and may just purchase a copy. Yes, some of these games are probably shovelware, but some of them seem to be truly good games that just didn't have a million dollar budget and a 40 member dev team.

At any rate, if you have any interest in supporting the indie gaming market - or just want to see what's out there, either for free or for cheap, that isn't showing up on EB's shelves. I highly recommend them. And as JayIsGames mentioned, if you sign up (free, no CC info or anything) for an account in the next few days, you'll get a free copy of CheapAssGames' "Plasmaworm". It's not a brilliant game, but it is a fun diversion. :)

Seeya tomorrow, everybody. :)
