GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB by Michiel2006-09-07 07:04:56
Grub doesn't like dd for some reason. by Sharku2006-09-07 07:18:56
I think GRUB uses more than one sector by ttlogic 2006-09-07 07:45:23
That's why it doesn't like dd. Iirc they are necessary for GRUB's filesystem "drivers".

I'm not sure if those other sectors are immediately following the MBR (there is some slack space there that most fdisk programs will not assign to partitions), or are in the filesystem where GRUB itself (and its menu file) is hosted. In the first case you might be able to get by by copying more than 1 sector (up to 63 sectors), in the other case chances are the image you're blasting onto the PC needs to be exactly (down to the same data occupying the same logical sector on disk) the same as the system you take your GRUB MBR from.

Please take into account: I'm still using Lilo, having used GRUB only superficially.
