The partition structure on the original PC is like this (don't ask me why): 
/dev/hda1     - Linux
/dev/hda2     - Extended
    /dev/hda5 - Linux Swap
After the restore dd, the new pc has only this: 
/dev/hda1     - Linux
/dev/hda2     - Extended
I've manually changed that back now. It didn't fix the GRUB problem, but it's certainly an additional problem. :(
