GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB by Michiel 2006-09-07 07:04:56
I used dd to take a working master boot record from the only HD of pc1 and used dd to restore it to pc2. Here are the exact commands I used:

Backup : dd if=/dev/hda of=/mnt/sda1/drive.mbr bs=512 count=1
Restore: dd if=/mnt/sda1/drive.mbr of=/dev/hda bs=1

On the original PC, GRUB starts normally. But on the one I restored the MBR to, the string "GRUB " is printed to the screen in an infinite loop (well, so it appears).

Could someone tell me what could possibly be causing this? And how to fix it?

I have two theories:

1. The HD of the original pc is 40 GB and the HD of the second pc is 80 GB. Except for that, they're identical, but it might just be the problem.

2. After restoring the MBR, I also use Partition Image to restore hda1. Maybe that messes something up?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Partition Image might be the culprit (n/t) by Stuka2006-09-07 07:18:43
It might. And that would be bad. by Michiel2006-09-07 07:24:53
