But if you are staying in a space battle millieu, by the color of the explosion (i.e. oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere is going to look different than, say, methane/ammonia atmospheres when they're ignited). In the B5 episode "A View From the Gallery," one of the characters explains why the Earth ships blow up yellow/orange and the enemy ships blow up green - and that's the explanation.
