ADSL question. by McGowan2006-09-07 02:52:49

The qaulity of the ADSL service you get is dependant on a large number of factors. These include...

1. How distant you are from the exchange. Signal strength degrades over distance with copper wiring so the further you are the weaker the signal and the less speed the copper in the wire can transmit.

2. Line qaulity. Twisted copper pair telephone lines are not all created equal. The quality of the circut between you and the exchange will have a massive impact on the qaulity of service you get.

3. The routing path to the exchange. This basically means the path the line takes to the exchange. It doesn't always take the "most direct route" to the exchange and depending on the path it takes this can have an impact on the qaulity of your service.

Having a new telephone number does not mean you have a brand new line as existing carrier trunking will have been used to wire your phone in so the only effect a new telephone number has is at the exchange and the line speed test does not need to take this into account.

In all truth be told, you probably won't know your true line speed until the ADSL is in and working.

In regards to Demon, the only word I can really use for them is "fantastic". I use them personally and whenever my clients require me to handle their telecomms its Demon I turn to. In the many years I have used them (Harking back to the days before ADSL) I can only count three occasions where I personally have had a fault with my connection and my clients have never really reported much of an issue to me ever.

They use UK only call centres, so no having to get ready to translate every time you call them (Actually I am not entirely sure this is true right across the board but every time I have spoken to any of their departments, be it sales or support I have never not reached a UK call centre and my communication with them is pretty considerable).

They do not impose bandwith limits either on their services, so no having to worry if you are under your bandwidth cap as they own their own fibre.

Price has never really been much of a consideration for me as its never really been much of an issue but a quick glance at their prices doesn't strike me as being any more expensive than most.

There was an issue that stung them at the beginning of the year where a considerable number of customers found that they had never been debitted their monthly fees for a considerable time and they ended up owing a fairly large chunk of money instead of it having been taken monthly but frankly that isnt something that detracts from their qaulity as an ISP.

It probably sounds like I am on some kind of commission with them but I can assure you I'm not. There just a good ISP and in my business thats something that counts a lot where I can say to my client "Use these guys and you wont have any headaches with your comms".

Of course I am just one person and I'm sure there are others that have different or conflicting opnions so I recommend checking http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ as a good site to get reviews and opinions both good and bad.
