I have killed the proc to avoid reboot or just minimized it out of the way. But that turning off update doesn't simply shut off the reboot message. It shuts off automatic updates in general. I have used tweakui and a few other tools before. Also just altered things from unix when windows is being difficult.

I'd be happy if next version of windows allows for ctl alt backspace with a reload. Or if they fixed it so my mouse buttons worked the same as unix. I don't know about you but I hate it when I switch OS and forget "Oops Oh yea the middle button wont do *that* anymore"
