And I can tell you where I am the caregiver would get compassionate grounds unemployment insurance for a set period of time at the usual UIC amount. The person with cancer would have limited services depending on the stage of the disease and how impacted 4 areas of functioning are as well as if they require treatment 5 days a week or more. Treatment is defined as requiring attention of a medical professional. Many proceedures aren't conducted in hospitals and families are trained to do them. I have dealt with 6 family members who had to deal with this issue and one friend.

If a person meets the requirements they may temporarily obtain the UIC or welfare under special classification. Often families rely heavily on public service agencies or programs through hospitals.
