High school students are required to pass a basic course in first aid. It's not much nor is it as comprehensive as a live saving course, but it's better than nothing. Of course the odds of actually remembering any of that is negligible. That girl's scenario is outside the scope of that course. Like I said it was basic and aimed at stuff you might run into at home. Getting impaled by a falling branch is not something even considered.
