There are times when doing this can damage your page. For example, whitespace is significant in inline elements, such as a hyperlink. Do you want an extra space getting underlined at the beginning and end of your link? Thought not.

Also, whitespace is significant in pre tags and a few other places. I don't think I've ever found a tool smart enough to do it all exactly how I want.
