alchemical scams from hundreds of years ago. And no, I don't feel sorry for these people, either.

I do feel sorry for elderly people who get ripped off by fake lottery scams and the like. Greed may also play into it, but also gullibility and lack of short term memory ("Did I purchase a lottery ticket?"), and placing trust in people who are not trustworthy.
