Simply put, any time violence or harm is dealt in the name of a book or under the influence of that book, the book has caused harm. This is not to say that the book (or its author) carries blame for the act.
Summarizing once more, I think, that a good Christian, understanding the teachings of Jesus, would not be killing or raping or whatever else is described in the book. As for the website, most of the comments to quotations is plainly untrue, bending the quotations to suit the author, and totally omitting fragments saying different things. I think that the most important thing is to remain calm and thinking. Does anyone blame Hinduists for the caste system or burning of the widows today? I didn't hear about it. So why should we blame Christians for deeds that nearly none of them do. IMHO blaiming bible for violence is at best far-fetched.
Sorry for the length and possible mistakes, it's nearly 4 am here :)
I didn't hesitate to state that the author was heavily biased in his choice of quotes and their interpretation. However, the simple fact that they are quotes supports the contention that the bible is harmful. Every one of the named books would have been harmless if people had fully understood the works and material properly. I totally agree with you that the contents are indicative of the culture in with they were penned (And have said as much many times in discussion with priests and theologians). Even so, this knowledge and perception on our part does not offset the harm that has been done by people who do no have or did no want it.
Finally, if a book in any way provides an opportunity to excuse ones acts then it has harmed the victims of those acts. |
