One has to misunderstand the teaching of the Bible to think it advocates murder, rape, etc (remember the New Testament). Of course, one can also understand them clearly and decide to try to use the letter in stead of spirit of the book in order to push ignorant people into such a belief.
In both ways ignorance is involved. Now I understand that most of people here are *very* intelligent, but that may sometimes be a problem when it comes to understanding people who think less.
Of course the way in which the Bible is written doesn't make the task of understanding it an easy one. Even more then, I think that most, if not all, of the harm was caused by ignorance, and for sure all has been caused by people. Seriously, IMO Didactylos is right about books only causing harm when falling from heights. The rest of harm is done only by people, and only people can be held responsible for it.
