I worked for Public Storage quite a few years ago. And as much as it might piss you off, it dose need to remain locked at all times. I'm surprised that whom ever you went with did not forcibly ask you to buy one of there locks, or make you lock it right away (witch is a cheep trick to make you buy one of there locks) The reason for this is L-Users, if they had left the unit unlocked some dip-s**t would have come along and filled it with there stuff. Or tossed junk into it. Then they would have had a whole nightmare trying to deal with it. Been there, done that, don't want the T-shirt
