Giving special dispensation for imagined LDs detracts from those that actually NEED it. I blame teh Intarweb for the current trend. Parent 1 posts a message to an online forum, "My child gets extra time on tests because of an LD." Parent 2 reads this post and thinks, Hmmm...little Johnny seems to have trouble completing his tests...I wonder if HE'S got an LD? Parent 2 then searches the net for a suitable LD for her child to have (in much the same way that a hypocondriac will search a medical textbook to find a disease that he or she "has"), all the time ignoring the fact that Little Johnny spends the majority of the test period staring blankly at the chalkboard rather than actually TAKING the test. When Little Johnny gets extra time to take the test, how do you think he's going to spend it? Little Johnny fails, and Parent 2 sues the school. People who abuse the system like that REALLY irritate me.
