I'm teaching a summer course (soft touch for department head in a jam).
I told the students that there would be seven assignments. Because I am not interested in collecting doctors' notes, accident reports, parole hearing notices, etc., I throw away the two lowest assignment marks, including missed assignments. Two should be enough - missing three out of seven will require a heart-to-heart scolding.
Also, the assignments are due at the beginning of the lecture. I then go through the solutions. Immediately. Late submissions need not apply. (But you get two freebies, so this shouldn't be a problem, right?)
Student comes to me with (late) assignment number three in hand and doctor's note. I told him that there was no problem - it would just be one of the freebies (which is what the freebie deal is all about).
He says he missed the first two assignments.
I ask why.
No particular reason.
I explain Reality.
He goes to department head with complaint.
Department head explains Reality.
