the personality of the kids matters as well. As does their relationship. I would never ask step-siblings to share a bed-- it's too difficult unless, again, they start from infancy. And if the kids in question have any behavioral problems, it's better to give them separate rooms. Sure, this seems like isolating a problem, but it's really just good sense. You don't want the kid who hasn't yet learned not to bite to be sharing a room with the baby who isn't yet old enough to say "he hurt me."
