that any person who does not share their faith is in dire jeapordy -- already condemned, in fact -- and only save-able through conversion to their own faith. Because they consider themselves to be good people, they cannot sit back and idly watch as another soul lives in such peril; their conscience will not allow them not to act. Most likely, by his own value system, your neighbor thought he was acting in your best interests. This is one of the most effective ways for a "religious" meme to propogate: not only does it establish rewards for the faithful and dire ills for the non-beliver, but it uses the believer's own concern for others to spread itself to others.
