If it was closer to emminent flash flooding or other major catastrophe, bugging out may have been a good idea. But, with what you describe it sounds like the actual event was shortlived and sticking around to help with cleanup/recovery was defeinitely the right idea. Sounds like you made a few good neighbors along the way, which is never a bad thing (specailly in future 'events').
