Things to keep in mind by Ishta 2006-07-26 13:54:22
Earthquake protection is extra and will increase the price by about $40. Minimum coverage is $10,000 with at least one million liability. Deductables for the first two years is $1000 and no discount is given unless over age fourty(not all agents will give that discount). There are discounts depending on if you have fire extinguishers, and sprinkler systems in some buildings. Also they will need to know if you have a fire hydrant within 500m and how close the nearest fire department is. The more buildings connected to yours the more risk and they may ask if you smoke. I am within close proximity to two hydrants and a few blocks from a fire department. I have an extinguisher but no sprinklers and I share a wall with one other unit.(They may want to know your unit age) My insurance is $329-600 depending on the insurance agency.

If you obtain insurance the landlord may relax restrictions on aquariums, waterbeds, and BBQ's. When I had insurance in past I was given permission for aquairums and water beds. I was told without contents insurance it was forbidden because of damage that could be done if something breaks.
