| I've repeated this time and again in my law class (because not even law students manage it here) -- In Norwegian, we have three 'verdicts'. "skyldig" (guilty as charged), "ikke skyldig" (not guilty -- could have done it, but it cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt) and "uskyldig" (innocent -- couldn't possibly have done it). It is perfectly possible that you've done what you're being charged of, but the prosecutor cannot convince the court that you did it. Your verdict would be 'not guilty', but you wouldn't be innocent. Law needs that kind of differences. If a judge could only deliver a "guilty" or an "innocent" verdict, you would see a whole lot of rebellion against the current court system. |
