But if Andrea Yates was insane at the time - if chemical or neural processes in her brain were so corrupted or distorted that she couldn't exercise even minimal judgement - must we as a society seek revenge? Punishment should be the last priority in sentencing, not the first - no matter how satisfying it might be to put this woman to death, it won't bring back the innocent lives she took, nor will it prevent the next person suffering from severe mental illness from doing whatever they will do.
