between "intention" and "reason"?

If she intended to save her children from the devil, it could still be that she didn't want to kill them but felt she had no alternative. In that case, I'd probably say that her intention (primary motivation) was to save her children from the devil by any means possible.

Doesn't mean she was right, or even rational, but it does mean that her point was not to kill.
