The browser ID is included in the headers of the http request your browser sends out to the web server. Web servers can see that information and serve you different pages based on which browser is detected.

Some browsers will allow you to modify that identification; Konquerer, Netscape - I think even FireFox'll let you (don't quote me, I'm not sure). If I'm not mistaken, even the underlying OS is identified in the headers.

Any W3 gurus out there want to fill in the blanks I'm leaving here?
