Ok a few hints just in case anyone else is running into these same issues. 1> install Berkeley DB from source. The apt-get one doesn't always work. 2> edit /etc/ld.so.conf to include /usr/local/lib & run ldconfig 3> apt-get install libwrap0-dev I now have openldap running the make test, so far so good. phew
