on the amount of "self-awareness" or volition one can ascribe to the objects. Generally, I would ascribe more self-awareness to a horse than to a self-replicating chair, and to that extent I would feel more comfortable saying that a horse had a "purpose" in reproducing itself which could be different than a human purpose in wanting the horse to reproduce itself.

In other words, it would be hard for me to say that these self-replicating chairs had a *purpose* for replicating. Perhaps I should have said something like "That creation was done by the horses for a purpose other than providing good seats for their human owners." Since, in my interpretation, the self-replicating chair would have no purpose in reproducing itself, the same statement cannot be made of the chair.
