I recall in grade 2 coming home after school and greeting my mother's two friends on the porch as Miss. etc. As I was walking over to the neighbour I heard them comment about how kids used Miss when referring to them. Even as a 7 yo I knew why. All our teachers were single women, so we were accustomed to referring to adult women as Miss. Simple as that.
