My mom's building was on fire last night. :-( by Illiad2006-11-19 12:55:59
How did it hit 3 units? by Myke2006-07-26 08:19:38
    It's usually between *sections* by esbita2006-07-26 08:22:28
Yikes. That wouldn't fly in Ontario. (n/t) by Myke2006-07-26 09:08:07
Building codes have improved since by esbita 2006-07-26 09:13:38
But places built in the 60's/70's were under totally different standards. There was a HUGE apartment fire near here a couple years ago- it spread because the codes at the time only required the "firewall" to be built halfway up- a stupid rule and rendered the whole thing useless. That entire section basically burnt to the ground and displaced several dozen families.

My complex's firewalls are solid, but it's 8 units/section. 2 apts in my section have smokers. I keep a backup smoke alarm since the one in my apt is hard-wired.

It's not just your own safety measures you have to worry about, but those of the idiot next door, too.
