Some low end products even use a cheap non-RS232 complient serial interface of 3.3V for 0 and 0V for 1. It saves the cost of a line driver IC.

The down side is that it doesn't always work since it's in violation of the spec and is making assumptions on how the other end of the line will react to invalid inputs. If you don't mind unreliable operation then it is one way of simplifying things.

In the situation here it's just as easy to do things properly by using two outputs to supply the signal levels so why use a hack of dubious reliability for no benefit?
