Novak did not say she was ever a covert operative. Here is the entire paragraph with her name in the disputed article:
Wilson never worked for the CIA, but his wife, Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Two senior administration officials told me Wilson's wife suggested sending him to Niger to investigate the Italian report. The CIA says its counter-proliferation officials selected Wilson and asked his wife to contact him. "I will not answer any question about my wife," Wilson told me.
Ok, he says she was an agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Were her duties what was covert? Novak confirmed this with the CIA prior to publication. He does not call her a covert operative.
The next line says he was told Plame wanted Wilson on the mission and that they are married. Again, no mention of covert status. Wilson's wife's name is in his bio that was published in Who's Who in America. No secret there. And this report turned out to be true despite denials.
So Novak didn't mention covert status and claims his sources (Rove, the CIA and a mystery person) didn't either. |
