Another random fact list - some questionable by jayfarm2006-07-12 07:58:24
The Winston Churchill one's not true by watsondog 2006-07-12 08:17:09
I've been in the room and it is NOT a bathroom or "ladies' room" at all. The room is about 12' x 16' and is a normal bedroom.

The confusion comes from a confusion in the meaning of the word "cloakroom" back in the old days. Churchill was born during a formal ball at Blenheim Palace, his grandfather's mansion. The room he was born in was a spare bedroom pressed into service to hold ladies' cloaks (women at the time wore enormous ballgowns over which they couldn't wear coats, so they wore cloaks). The room was therefore referred to as a cloakroom in many of his biographies.

However, at the time Churchill became well-known in the United States around the Second World War, the word "cloakroom" was used as a euphemism for "bathroom", so when biographies of him stating that he was born in a cloakroom became popular in the States Americans assumed that he had been born in a bathroom or ladies' room. The mistake has been perpetuated into the current day by these lists of 'facts'.
