if you want to be more 'new technology', get her a computer with faxmodem (in the cable era i bet they offer you money to take it ;P) install a nice fax program and get an old dotmatrix printer (the noise wont bother her, since she's almost deaf :) and a box of paper. Set the system up to pick up the phone after 5 or more rings (so you can still use the phone), then first let it scan for fax, if no response enable the voicemail (your boyfriend can scan that when he gets home). If there is a fax, recieve it and print it banner style :)
There are even lots of online services to convert speech to fax messages, so you can go all directions :)
