That isn't a helicopter, that's a mosquito. by toxin 2006-07-04 07:17:21
I had to explain to her that the somewhat blurry large image in the photograph was NOT a helicopter. Once she saw the next in the series, she had to agree.

Photography up here is very challenging. BUGS!!!!

We followed this challenge with a visit with some friends of Helen's. They are a very traditional Inuit family. They had 7 arctic char out from their nets that afternoon. They were making sun-dried fish (fillet slice the flesh into cubes, leaving the skin intact, rinse in salted water to reduce the number of flies on it, hang over a rack for a couple of days).

Ever watched your lover suck the eyes out of a fish? It is apparently a traditional Inuit treat to eat the eyes of the fish. Our host used her ulu [Inuit "woman's knife"] to crunch out the brains and eyes from the fish head. She then handed the eyes to Helen to eat. I was offered some but...

I am just not that brave.

As well, there was another Inuit delicacy on the menu. Caribou head. In a society as fuel poor as the Inuit, culinary arts are somewhat rudimentary. Cooking consists mainly of boiling or... boiling.

Recipe for Caribou Head

Take a few caribou heads
Cut off most of the facial skin
Place in large pot of boiling water
Keep fire going for about a half hour
Pull out caribou head and start eating

For a special extra treat: Add one package of onion soup mix!

Very fatty, very ....well

It is not on my personal menu in the near future.
