something that I forgot to mention is that even if I managed to get capture support via the all in wonder working mythtv doesn't support it anyway as it apparently only provides partial V4l compatability. the ati binary drivers work fine and provide easy(ish) tv out (no manual patching of xorg sources necissary) and i've got a tv tuner card in my main system that I can plunk into the box when I get everything else working.
