BBC: Paranoia a widespread problem. by run.dll 2006-07-03 16:21:17
Though the survey results are interesting, the use of the word "paranoia" as a synonym for "worry" is silly. Using a term from psychiatry to make a story seem more significant than it really is doesn't impress me.

"Dr Freeman said in the past paranoid thinking had been assumed to occur only in people with severe mental illness, partly because of a reticence in the general population about talking about paranoid thoughts."

This is because the term "paranoid" should be used to describe the feelings and thoughts of those who suffer from paranoia, not the everday niggling worries of the average person. Redefining the word in order to cast a wider net doesn't make paranoia more common.

OTOH, this post is intended to irritate 27% of you :-)
