I am currently working in a contracting situation which heavily resembles the movie Office Space. I have multiple reporting bosses on any given project. They've had me come in when I was sick with bronchitis, apparently for the sole purpose of confronting me about not "communicating properly" while I had bronchitis (and therefore turning in an incomplete draft-- a draft which I told them when they assigned it would be incomplete, and they agreed with that). They require weekly status reports, which I hate. If I am late with a status report, I get 1-3 people emailing me to bug me about it. When they had me bring my bronchitis into the office, after we established that "every Friday" would be a check-in date, I promised a deliverable "next week," thinking "next Friday." They confirmed "next Thursday" which had me utterly baffled.
Meanwhile, they tell me they want me to be a go-getter and autonomous and handle the project management for this project (I'm not a project manager, don't have the authority within the company to be the project manager, and being paid 78% of my normal rate for this job anyway).
I am tempted to beat them all silly with my red Swingline stapler.
Anyway, last week I handed in my deliverable on Thursday and responded to the MULTIPLE EMAILS from the multiple managers asking me to report on the status of my deliverable.
Mind you, Status Report Day is Friday. Today (yes, the day between the weekend and the holiday!) is the weekly team meeting.
So, your opinion: should I have made an additional report on Friday, or should I consider the Thursday report sufficient? |
