| So do people actually click on spam? |

Personally, I don't think I've ever clicked on a link in an unsolicited email. I imagine that's the case for many people here. But obviously the answer to the TLP question is "yes" to some degree, because they keep sending it. But how many people click it?
According to the article, the clickthrough rate for most spam is pretty atrocious. The 2nd most successful spam topic is pharmaceuticals - ads for VIAKAGARA CH3AP! and hair regrowth - with a rate of 0.02%. That is to say, if you send out a million emails, only 200 people will even click on the link, and 999,800 people will trash it.
Behind that in "success" terms (at this point the description I think is a bad one) is Rolex watches, with a 0.0075% click-through rate. That's 75 people clicking out of a million, and 999,925 folks throwing your spam away.
Those are #2 and #3; other products get even worse results. Here's the surprise, though, at least for me: pornographic spam (#1) has a 5.6% clickthrough rate. Out of a million emails, 56,000 people are clicking the link to check out your product. Much as I hate to see it in my inbox, I can see why it keeps showing up if that's how successful it is.
The answer is clear. We need to better educate the public about the many, many ways of getting their pr0n for free, so they'll stop clicking on the spam and paying for it. ;-) |
