I have never got to grips with why they let things go - unless they think you might want to play with it first. Dead ones, yes, they want the superior cat (i.e. you) to praise them for catching something for lunch, or whatever.

I used to just keep an eye on what mine did - so that they didn't take half of the mouse somewhere leaving bits all over the floor.
