I don't know how many times I've deleted the source tree (and the tarball) for wpa_supplicant. Which merely forced me to re-download the tarball next time I needed to see something about the program, but "next time" was generally 2-3 months down the road, and 1-2 new versions had been released. (So I'd have re-downloaded it anyway, even if I hadn't deleted it the previous time around.)
