Just remember this one important item by Ishta 2006-06-22 19:34:20
Never ever while using sudo, su, or root type the following in the root directory

rm -rf /*

It will whipe your linux install. While in a directory and you want to nuke a bunch of subdirs. Running "rm *" will delete all files in the directory your in and will warn it can't delete directories. "rm -rf" is similar to the old dos deltree command only in linux there is no undelete. While Gnome and KDE do offer trash can not all of the GUI's do under unix and will often just totally delete a file. "-rf" I think stands for recursive folders. Then the "/*" is the path meaning everything under root which is why you never want to type that.

I every so often type:

rm -rf /var/tmp/*

and

rm -rf /tmp/*

That cleans out all files in those directories and removes the subdirectories under them.

One other tip if using a editor as root for a configuration file or script. Remeber to turn off line wrapping. Some configuration files really don't like it.
