With software also just restart after a config change. But installing anything new or major it does get to be a habbit to reboot.

For the .xinitrc if you ever choose to use one it's a simple bash file. The contents look like(repeat the program name with & after until you have covered all you wish to launch.):

#!/bin/bash
[program exec you wish to launch] &

exec [window manager you perfer's exec]
