Arivia, you're a capable, smart and shrewd debater, your debate skills are quite excellent. I think if you could remove emotion from your discussions you'd be able to best any debate team out there!
However, you have an achillies heal; you take offense much to quickly. Much like this Farside comic when someone says something the least bit inflamitory you hear only that.
The best debater is the one who keeps his calm. I saw something truely awsome once; my brother in an argument. The person who he was arguing with had the rest of my family near to the point of hitting him, he managed to get thier ire up that high. My brother stepped in (at the age of 14) and sat there calmly, never raised his voice and never gave a hint of violent action. In fact, when the other party raised his voice my brother lowered his. My brother came out victorious because the anger consumed the other party.
In this way, you need to react to the opinions, no matter how out there they seem to you. What JD is suggesting is that if your point is not getting through then perhaps you need to restate it.
An interesting excercise for you would be to enter a debate on the opposite side of your opinion, one that's quite close to your heart. If you argue the oposite effectivly you'll understand what I mean here. |
