Any metal armor reduces your spellcasting success rate. The bulkier the armor, the more it reduces it. Mithril is the worst in this regard. Body armor that does NOT inhibit spellcasting includes leather, studded leather, crystal plate mail (rare and heavy), dragon scales, and dragon scale mail. Metal helmets and boots also inhibit spellcasting ability but not by nearly as much. All shields are also bad. Robes are unique in that they actually help spellcasting.
