About 7 years ago were working to adopt a girl. When our attorney contacted the father he indicated that if the mother didn't want to raise her, he did. We backed off immediately for two reasons.

1) We felt it was his right to do so.

2) Our attorney indicated that we'd be spending a bunch of money and would be unlikely to be able complete the adoption if we continued. (This was in Wisconsin and the father was in Nevada -- YMMV.)

I wish the prospective adoptive parents in this case had done the same.
