How about this: WHO defines marriage? by esbita 2006-06-22 10:07:52
In a secular society, the church does not have a monopoly on it. Fine. So it's what "society" or what the government is willing to define as marriage. In different societies, you can have multiple wives; but not here.

In our society, marriage is defined as something different- but it's defined by society at large. So what matters is what the larger society is willing to define as marriage, for whatever reason.

As for the religious right making noises against divorce- they yak all the time about the divorce rate! But many churches also address it on a case by case basis by offering marriage counseling and other support resources to try and strengthen marriages and prevent the bigger conflicts. Few priests and preachers will encourage staying with an abusive spouse, but they speak out often against the high divorce rate- particularly because of extramarital affairs.
