Churches don't own the concept of marriage, nor were they the first to utilize it. Belief systems also can't "own" anything.

I'm not sure I understand "it is what it is." Why is your perception of the world Truer than someone else's? Because you follow the teachings of one particular church? We know where this argument now leads...

I think you can safely say "for you" X = Y, but actively convincing everyone else of the same might take more than "because my interpretation of this book said so."
