"The huge number of single mothers (and much smaller number of single fathers) show that child-rearing can be performed quite effectively outside of marriage, and much of our child-rearing is handled by schools and other institutions anyway."
I will require a great deal of convincing, especially with regard to that last part, before I can accept this as inherently good, which he seems to imply.
"Finally, the emotional satisfaction and sense of security that can be provided by marriage is apparently fleeting, with...a goodly number of marriages harboring psychological, physical, and sexual abuse."
This argument is just plain stupid. Replace "marriage" with "sexual relationship" or even "parent/child relationship" and the sentence still applies, but (in the first case, at least), nobody is arguing that these are obsolete or unnecessary.
It seems to me that the flaw in his reasoning is the same assumption made by many Marxists and Feminists: namely, that economics and/or career are or ought to be the highest goal for humans and the overriding or sole factor behind decision-making. |
