We were writing programs to process income tax forms for the clients of big accounting firms. Of course, any optimization we might have gotten from using Fortran, we lost because we were running the compiled programs on VM/CMS using a series of EXEC, EXEC2 and REXX scripts. Ugh. Talk about horrific repressed memories...
